Lymphatic Balancing

The lymphatic system provides a primary defense against invading microorganisms and disease.  Lymph nodes and other lymphatic organs filter the lymph to remove toxins, microorganisms, and other foreign invaders.  This vital system also transports excess fluid and cellular debris to the blood for removal from the body.    When this important system is not working optimally, our body tissues become toxic and disease conditions are more likely to flourish.

Our lymphatic therapy techniques help to restore balance while promoting improved functioning of  the lymph system.

NOW AVIALBLE - ELECTRO-LYMPHATIC THERAPY

What is ELT?

Electro-Lymphatic Therapy is an effective, gentle, light touch non-invasive technique to stimulate the proper flow and drainage of the lymph system.  A combination of vibrational, light, and electrical waves help to stimulate the flow by causing the breakdown of proteins that have become trapped within the tissue. When trapped proteins (not to be confused with nutrient proteins) release their bond, the stagnant lymph is released and will flow out into its normal filtration and reabsorption channels, allow the lymph system to work more optimally.

ELT impacts the superficial as well as the deeper layers of the lymph system, and is beleived to be 70% more effective than manual therapies.  It can be a useful tool with numerous conditions including - General Inflammation - Lymphedema - Edema and Water Retention - Immune Enhancement - Lymes - Pre/Post Athletic Application (decrease muscle/tendon strain and healing time) - Tissue Injury - Tight/Sore Muscles - General Detox & Cleansing.

Something to consider further: Inside the lymphatic system the fluid is called lymph. Outside of the lymph system the fluid is called interstitial fluid. This is the same fluid that bathes the cells throughout our body, providing nutrients as well as being a medium for removing cellular debris (toxins and/or byproducts of cellular metabolism). Because of these important functions of the lymphatic system, stagnant lymph can decrease the absorption of nutrients to the cellular level, as well as make it more difficult for toxins to be removed from the area surrounding the cells. Using techniques (such as ELT) that enhance lymph function can help improve the functions of the cells throughout the body.  Improving cellular function will help to improve the function of the tissues and organs that the cells make up.

Massage Cupping™, Vacuumobilization, ™ and MediCupping™

Massage Cupping™ therapy utilizes a negative pressure or pulling action to lift and separate tissue layers.  It is used to soften tight muscles, tone attachments, loosen adhesions and lift connective tissue. The suction of the cups facilitates the release of tight, hardened, or thickened connective tissue through this lifting action, thus loosening areas of adhesion or restriction.  This remarkable therapy also draws inflammation out of the body tissues while drawing hydration, blood flow and nourishment into body tissues. MediCupping™ drains excess fluids and toxins by opening lymphatic pathways. It invigorates the skin and body tissues while at the same time producing a profound level of relaxation through calming and sedating the nervous system.  The pulling action engages the parasympathetic nervous system promoting this deep level of relaxation experienced throughout the body.  This therapy can be used as a stand alone treatment or can be incorporated within a myofascial release treatment or regular massage therapy session.  For more information about Massage Cupping or to schedule an appointment call 205-669-5483 and press 2 for the Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork department extension.

What is Myofascial Release [MFR] Therapy?

'Myofascial". To understand this interesting word, let's break it down. 'Myo' means muscle and 'fascia' is the connective tissue that is found throughout our body. Fascia is a densely woven substance that surrounds and penetrates every muscle, bone, artery, vein and nerve as well as every organ of the body. Fascia that is found within the muscle unit, runs throughout the muscle fiber. Fascia also connects our muscles to our bones. This collagenous fiber is normally soft and pliable but can become restricted, tight, hardened or thickened (as in scare tissue). When this happens, it can restrict the movement of muscles and the bones to which they are attached. When movement becomes limited to any degree, the body will compensate in an attempt to bring balance back to our overall system. This compensation can cause further stress and strain and often results in increased pain. Restricted fascia can even impair the flow of hydration, nourishment, and oxygen into our tissues and cells while inhibiting the release of cellular wastes and trapped toxins from within and around these cells. This can impact the function of organs in areas where restrictions are located. Because fascia is one continuous structure that exists from head to toe, restrictions can become like a pull in a sweater. As fiber is tugged in once place, tightened strands of fascial tissue can put tension on other areas of the body.

Accidents, scarring, trauma, inflammation, repeated postural stresses and/or surgery can create myofascial restrictions that can produce pressures of up to 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures. This can impose a“straight-jacket” of force, which may cause pain, headaches, anxiety and other symptoms. Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective manual therapy that involves applying gentle, sustained pressure into the myofascial connective tissue restrictions. As gentle pressure is applied slowly, the fascia begins to “release” or elongate. This amazing hands-on technique helps to soften and open up (or "release") these restricted areas, eliminating pain, restoring motion and improving function.

What is an MFR treatment session like?

MFR is a manual, hands-on technique that is very different from traditional massage therapy. Although treatment is performed directly on the skin, no creams, lotions or oils are used. This enables the therapist to accurately detect connective tissue restrictions and apply the appropriate amount of sustained pressure without sliding across the skin, in order to facilitate release of the fascia. While traditional massage is generally done through a continual gliding or sliding across the skin, MFR utilizes a prolonged pressure over specific areas where restrictions are located and uncovered. At times treatment can be quite gentle, and you may think that nothing is happening. Other times deeper restrictions may be uncovered, bringing about a variety of sensations as these restricted areas release. For Myofascial Release appointments, I recommend that women bring a pair of loose fitting shorts and a sports bra or a two piece bathing suit to wear during the treatment session. Men can wear or bring gym shorts, or something similar. As a therapist, I also promote education on postural and movement awareness along with self treatment instruction as a means to enhance and maintain optimal overall health.
